Pirehill First School

Welcome

Science

The Science Lead is Mrs Baylis

At Pirehill, Science is an exciting and important part of our curriculum. We aim to spark children’s natural curiosity and help them make sense of the world around them through hands-on experiences, exploration, and discovery. We follow the National Curriculum for Science and use the PLAN primary science resources to support high-quality teaching and learning.

We place great importance on helping our children to work scientifically – that is, learning how to think and behave like young scientists. This means not just learning facts, but also learning how to ask questions, investigate ideas, collect evidence, and explain what they find out in a meaningful way.

Throughout their time with us, children take part in a wide range of practical activities based on the five types of scientific enquiry:

  • Observing over time – watching how things change, such as plants growing or ice melting
  • Pattern seeking – spotting patterns in what they see or measure
  • Identifying, classifying and grouping – sorting materials, objects, or animals into groups
  • Comparative and fair testing – carrying out simple experiments to compare things and make tests fair
  • Research using secondary sources – using books, videos or websites to find out more about a topic

By including all of these types of enquiry in our lessons, we help children develop the skills they need to investigate the world around them, think critically, and become confident, independent learners. Our aim is for all children to enjoy science, see its relevance in everyday life, and carry their enthusiasm for the subject with them as they move on to the next stage of their education.
