Welcome

Maths

The Maths leader is Mrs Askey.

Maths is an important life skill which helps us to make sense of the world around us. Every day we use maths in so many ways – from working out amounts of money and calculating change, to reading bus or train times, or measuring ingredients when cooking. Having strong number skills gives children the confidence to do all of these things and much more.

At our school, we want every child to enjoy maths and achieve their very best. Our curriculum is carefully planned to build knowledge step by step and give children the skills they need for life. Maths is broken down into the following key areas:

  • Number

  • Shape, Space and Measure

  • Statistics

To help children understand new ideas, we use the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach. This means that children first use practical resources (concrete), then move on to pictures and diagrams (pictorial), before applying their knowledge in number sentences and calculations (abstract).

We follow the overviews provided by the White Rose Maths Hub, which ensures clear progression across the school. To strengthen fluency, children also take part in daily Number Sense sessions, which give them regular opportunities to practise and develop mental maths strategies.

Most importantly, we aim to develop a love of learning in maths. We encourage children to be curious, to enjoy solving problems, and to approach challenges with confidence and resilience. Our goal is for every child to leave our school feeling positive about maths and ready to use it in their everyday lives.
