Forest School

🌳 Forest School at Pirehill First School

At Pirehill First School, we are proud to offer a rich and exciting Forest School programme that provides our children with regular opportunities to learn and thrive in the natural environment. Set within our beautiful outdoor space, Forest School is an integral part of our wider curriculum and plays a key role in supporting the holistic development of every child.

🌿 What is Forest School?

Forest School is a child-led, play-based approach to learning that takes place in the outdoors, whatever the weather. It allows children to explore, take appropriate risks, develop independence, and build resilience — all within a safe and supportive natural setting.

Sessions are planned and delivered by our Level 3 qualified Forest School leaders and are designed to nurture confidence, creativity, curiosity, and a deep connection with the natural world.

🌟 Aims of Forest School at Pirehill

Our Forest School programme is designed to:

  • Promote confidence, self-esteem, and independence
  • Develop problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Support physical and emotional wellbeing through time spent outdoors
  • Encourage curiosity, exploration, and a love of nature
  • Foster a sense of environmental responsibility and sustainability

We believe that the skills and attributes developed through Forest School are essential for lifelong learning, supporting children not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.

🍁 What Does a Forest School Session Look Like?

During a typical Forest School session, children might:

  • Build dens, shelters, or bug hotels
  • Hunt for mini-beasts and explore local habitats
  • Use tools including knives, bowsaws and loppers (safely under supervision)
  • Build and light fires using flint and steel (safely under supervision)
  • Create natural artwork and sculptures
  • Learn about seasonal changes, weather, and plant life

Children are encouraged to follow their interests, ask questions, work together, and take ownership of their learning journey.

“Forest School is not just about outdoor learning — it’s about nurturing the whole child.”
