In this section you will find information about our EYFS pedagogy. It focuses on the teaching and learning principles we believe are key to children’s success in the early years. You will also find a detailed overview of our approach to pedagogy, explaining how we believe young children learn and how we teach to support their development. Our practice is informed by early years research and evidence, ensuring that the experiences we provide help every child to engage, explore and thrive.
At Pirehill First School, we believe that high-quality interactions between adults and children are at the heart of effective early learning. Through our PEARLS approach, adults create meaningful learning opportunities that support children’s development, curiosity and engagement. We are strong in our belief that:
“High levels of engagement = high levels of attainment.”
— Alistair Bryce-Clegg
Presence means being fully attentive and emotionally available to children during their learning and play.
Our staff position themselves carefully within the learning environment, observing, listening and noticing what children are interested in. By being present, adults can respond to children’s ideas, extend their thinking and support learning in the moment.
Everyday moments are powerful opportunities for learning.
We recognise that some of the most meaningful learning takes place during daily routines and spontaneous experiences. Staff make the most of these moments to develop language, problem-solving and curiosity through conversation, questioning and shared experiences.
Attuned responses mean responding sensitively to children’s needs, interests and developmental stage.
Adults carefully observe children’s play and respond in ways that support their emotional security and learning. This might include modelling language, offering encouragement, asking thoughtful questions or adapting the environment to support exploration.
Serve and return interactions form the foundation of strong communication and learning.
When a child initiates communication—through speech, gesture, facial expression or play—adults respond and build upon it. These back-and-forth interactions strengthen language development, relationships and cognitive growth.
Language development is central to children’s learning and future success.
Staff model rich vocabulary, extend conversations and create opportunities for children to express their ideas. Through storytelling, questioning and sustained shared thinking, we support children to develop confidence in speaking, listening and understanding.
Support ensures that every child can succeed and feel valued within the learning environment.
Adults provide the right level of guidance and encouragement to help children persevere, solve problems and build independence. Through carefully scaffolded interactions, staff help children to deepen their understanding and achieve their full potential.
