Computing at Pirehill First school: Years 1 to 4

At our school, we use the Teach Computing programme to introduce children in Years 1 to 4 to the exciting world of computing. This carefully planned curriculum helps your child develop important skills like problem-solving, logical thinking, creativity, and staying safe online — all in a fun and engaging way!

What Will My Child Learn?

  • Years 1 and 2: Children explore the technology around them, create digital art, learn how to give clear instructions to make a robot move, and begin simple programming. They also start to understand how to collect and organise information.
  • Years 3 and 4: Building on these skills, children try more complex coding, create digital media projects, learn how computer systems work, and work confidently with data.

Online safety and responsible use of technology are an important focus throughout the programme.

How Does This Connect to Early Years?

Before starting Year 1, our younger children in Reception follow the Barefoot Computing programme, which focuses on developing key thinking skills like problem-solving and sequencing — often through fun, hands-on activities without screens. This gives children a strong foundation for the computing work they’ll do in Years 1 and beyond.

Why Is Computing Important?

Computing helps children become creators — not just users — of technology. They learn to think logically, solve problems, and express themselves creatively through digital tools. We also prioritise teaching children how to stay safe and responsible online, so they’re confident and prepared for the digital world.
