At Pirehill First School, we believe that helping children learn how to stay safe online is just as important as helping them stay safe in the real world. To support this, we have created our Online Safety Squad—a small team of enthusiastic pupils from Year 1 to Year 4 who help promote positive, safe and responsible use of technology across the school.
The Online Safety Squad is a pupil-led group that works alongside teachers to make sure everyone in school understands how to stay safe when using computers, tablets or the internet. Members are chosen because they are sensible, trustworthy and eager to help others.
Children in the Online Safety Squad have several key roles:
Raise awareness
They help remind their classmates about simple, age-appropriate online safety rules such as keeping personal information private, being kind online, and talking to a trusted adult if something worries them.
Share pupil voice
The squad gives children from different year groups the chance to share their ideas about technology and safety. They help staff understand how pupils use the internet and what support they might need.
Support school events
The team gets involved in activities such as Safer Internet Day, assemblies and class discussions. They help create posters, quizzes and messages that encourage safe online behaviour throughout the school.
Be positive role models
Members of the squad show others how to use technology responsibly. They set a good example by following school rules, thinking carefully online, and encouraging others to do the same.
Children today are growing up in a digital world. By involving pupils directly, the Online Safety Squad helps them feel confident, responsible and informed about the choices they make online. It also helps build a strong whole-school culture where online safety is everyone’s responsibility.
